A simple Korean skincare routine for beginners
A considered place to begin: choose useful essentials, make one change at a time, and build a routine you enjoy keeping.

A beautiful bathroom shelf can be inspiring. It can also make a first skincare routine look far more complicated than it needs to be. Before choosing an essence, serum or mask, ask what is missing from the products you already own. The aim is a repeatable routine that suits your day, your budget and your skin.
The considered take: Start with the jobs your routine needs to do. A longer shopping list is not the measure of a better routine.
Begin with a small, useful foundation
The American Academy of Dermatology identifies cleansing, moisturising and sun protection as a simple foundation. Optional steps can be considered later; buying every category is unnecessary. [1]
Write your current products on a page and give each a job. If you already have a cleanser you enjoy, keep it on the list. Set a total budget before browsing, and leave room for replacing the essentials when they run out.
Give morning and evening a purpose
In the morning, think about the practical finish you need: comfortable skin and products that sit well together under your chosen sun protection. Follow individual directions rather than guessing an elaborate layering order.
For Australian sun protection, check the sunscreen label and AUST number. Broad spectrum refers to UVA and UVB protection. Follow its directions and use other sun-protection measures too; a serum or moisturiser does not replace sunscreen. [2]
Explore one optional step
If you want to try a serum, identify a single reason for adding it. Is there something specific you want to understand about its ingredients or texture? Read the full list and check whether another product already performs that role.
For example, Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum is an optional serum step. COSRX Full Fit Propolis Light Cream is a moisturiser. Their different formats do not make them a compulsory pair.
Make your routine easy to repeat
Keep a brief note of what you use, when you introduce it and how it feels. Introduce one new item at a time so your notes remain useful. Keep the rest of your routine familiar while you decide whether the addition earns its place.
If you have ongoing irritation or a diagnosed skin condition, get individual advice rather than building a routine from product trends.

A few useful questions
Do I need a ten-step routine?
No. Treat extra categories as choices, rather than a checklist you must finish.
Should I buy a cleanser and serum together?
Only if both have a clear place in your routine. Start with what you need to replace or understand first.
